Terrazzo Aggregates are Cornerstones of Color

Terrazzo Aggregates are Cornerstones of Color

When it comes to terrazzo design, color is always a key component. Whether that means being modern and neutral, bright and bold, or classical black and white, aggregate chips help to create endless possibilities.

Many aggregates like natural stones (marble and onyx) are capable of being ground and polished. These aggregates work great for epoxy terrazzo. Others like quartz, granite, and silica pebbles are best for rustic terrazzo because it doesn’t require any polishing.

Trendy Terrazzo

One of the newest trends in the terrazzo chip world is sparkle and shine – glass aggregates! From Jelly Bean glass  to glow-in-the-dark aggregate to crushed bottles and mirrors, glass chips add a simple, yet special touch to a terrazzo flooring.

Mixing It All Up

But terrazzo aggregates aren’t just for color and shine – they are a necessary part of the terrazzo process. A finished floor must have a minimum of 70 percent chip density on the surface. Lady Luck must be on our side because that’s a whole lot of crushed mirrors!

Chips are graded by number, according to size in conformity with the industry standards. Terrazzo floors made of #1 and #2 sized chips are known as “Standard.” Patterns with bigger aggregates, sized #3 – #7 are “Venetian.”

Standard mixes are defined by the NTMA. Contractors start with those mixes and then make samples to create custom terrazzo for their clients. Shiny glass, mother of pearl, marble, or even bright plastic are possible additions, offering unlimited combinations and colors for flooring designs.
