Javon Bea Hospital—Riverside, Rockford, IL
Hospital spaces see heavy foot-traffic, and they demand materials that are both highly durable and also easy to keep clean to the exacting needs of a healthcare space. And yet, for more modern spaces like Javon Bea Hospital in Rockford, Illinois, there’s also the need to provide a space that is inviting and comforting. Terrazzo was the best choice to meet both needs at once, with Northern Illinois Tile and Terrazzo Co handling an intricately designed 30,000 square foot space for the project.
“There were quite a few patterns; 11 different colors of terrazzo on the job on five different floors,” said Louis D’Agnolo of Northern Illinois Tile and Terrazzo. “And quite a few intricate geometric patterns, with lots of different angles in a space with a lot of geometric lines.”
Those layouts, which had to fit into rooms with highly angular walls, made use of some 30 different types of chips used in 11 different colors. There were also more than 21,000 feet of strips, with curved lines throughout the space. All of that added up to a big challenge: the crew had to brush up on their math and geometry skills to make sure everything fit perfectly into place.
And the wealth of variety in colors found in terrazzo made it the only viable choice for a project of this size.
“The terrazzo formulations and patterns were very conducive to this bright and welcoming space,” D’Agnolo said. “The aesthetics are beautiful, and with the ease and durability the materials will offer after installation—it’s been a great project.”
