Aurora Medical Center—Sheboygan, WI

Many hospitals and medical centers look the same – white walls, old tile or linoleum floors, and outdated architectural features. Not the Aurora Medical Center in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Aurora Health Care built a sleek new medical center featuring a modern design with the help of new terrazzo floors.

The Aurora Medical Center created a modern, welcoming building capable of comforting patients, employees, and visitors. The walls throughout the center are neutral. The muted tones compliment the stone and woodwork integrated in stairwell railings, portions of the walls, and accent pieces that add a warmth to the space.

The wow factor of the project is the terrazzo floors. Because of terrazzo’s antimicrobial properties, it is a popular flooring choice in hospitals and medical settings where cleanliness is key. The sweeping terrazzo which blankets 15,000 square feet on two levels is a modern, off-white color with a subtle aggregate of soft grays and whites that adds just the right amount of contrast.

The terrazzo wasn’t limited to the floors, however. Two staircases showcase the beautiful terrazzo, including the main staircase. Because of its central location, the main staircase was one of the highlights of the project and it was designed to welcome patients and hospital visitors. The staircase was covered in the same terrazzo as the floors, and it features a stunning waterfall edge.

When commenting on the project and why the medical center chose to go with terrazzo for its flooring option, Jason Zarwell, President of Wisconsin Terrazzo & Tile Inc said, “Aurora Medical likes terrazzo because it is durable, sleek, and modern looking.”

Terrazzo is both timeless and modern. It has a way of adding that wow factor to any space where it is installed.
