354 N. Union Ave. in Chicago fuses creativity and functionality

The art and craft of terrazzo are intricately intertwined to achieve functionality fused with beautiful design. Through tight collaboration with the architect, design, and terrazzo teams, 354 Union Ave. integrates terrazzo that enhances elegant spaces with designs that reflect the buildings angles.

Onni Fulton Market set out to redefine luxury living with a focus on innovation and craftsmanship. Situated in Chicago’s trendy and fast-growing Fulton Market district, developer Onni Group’s 33 story luxury building holds rental units and hotel suites.

Collaborative Design Process

“With its timeless elegance and unmatched durability, terrazzo continues to captivate and inspire, shaping the future of architectural design,” said Carmine Tucci of Amici Terrazzo. The collaborative effort between the design team and the terrazzo experts resulted in innovative applications of terrazzo throughout the building.

The scope of the project included the main lobby, a fireplace sitting room, hallways, and a hot tub room. Notably, the hot tub exemplifies the building’s fusion of creativity and functionality, emerging as a standout feature that showcases terrazzo craftsmanship and versatility.

The Art of Terrazzo

The tub is topped with marble floating on a poured-in place base. In addition, team faced the challenge of creating the proper pitch around numerous water drains and drainage systems in the hot tub room. Through meticulous planning and expertise, they utilized an epoxy underbed to achieve the desired pitch, overcoming the obstacle seamlessly.

“Terrazzo is more than just a material – it’s an art form,” said Tucci. The Onni Fulton Market project enabled the Amici team to extend the craft of terrazzo and take advantage of the endless design possibilities it offers. Unlike other construction materials that may lack individuality, “terrazzo stands out for its ability to create bespoke spaces that exude character and sophistication.”
