Akron Children’s Hospital Outpatient Rehab: Main Campus Entrance and Lobby Renovation—Akron, OH

Skilled craftsmanship, effective communication, and the aesthetic potential of terrazzo are the key elements that make up the terrazzo project at Akron Children’s Hospital. By working together, Youngstown Tile and Terrazzo, Hasenstab Architects, Inc., the facility architect, and others successfully navigated the challenges to deliver a stunning and functional flooring solution that enhances the hospital environment.

The use of terrazzo in the hospital not only added visual appeal but also contributed to a durable and easy-to-maintain surface.

Part of a larger renovation project, this phase renovated the hospital’s rehabilitation department. The department now has airy, bright, and larger rooms with a gym and more space for staff. It’s also marked with terrazzo in white, tan, and yellow, including a collection of nature-themed medallions.

Flooring for the rehab project presented major technical challenges for the Youngstown terrazzo team, according to Joshua Cohol, president of Youngstown Tile and Terrazzo. Finding the proper leveling – and a smooth transition from new to existing structures – required creative thinking from the team. The solution consisted of removing portions of pre-existing substrates and adding an epoxy resin and aggregate blend infill.

Additionally, a new lobby was added to the existing building, enhancing the hospital’s entrance and providing a welcoming space for patients and visitors. Joshua also highlighted the excellent communication between teams as a crucial factor in the project’s success, ensuring that all aspects were aligned and executed smoothly.

“Terrazzo always produces a beautiful, finished product, in large part due to the natural beauty of the stone and epoxy,” says Cohol. “It creates a beautiful canvas on the floor.”
