Shinola Hotel, Detroit, MI

Nestled in the heart of Detroit’s dynamic downtown, the Shinola Hotel is a symbol of the city’s architectural and cultural renaissance. Central to this renaissance is the hotel’s choice of terrazzo flooring, expertly installed by Michielutti Bros., Inc. This choice underscores the hotel’s commitment to blending aesthetic appeal with unmatched functionality.

Design Vision: The Role of Terrazzo

The project’s scope was ambitious, aiming to install terrazzo flooring in the hotel’s beer garden—a solarium that demanded a material both beautiful and resilient.

“It’s a solarium on top of a portion of the hotel, with a glass ceiling, glass walls – it’s a big event space,” Bob Michielutti, President of Michielutti Bros., Inc., said.

The choice of terrazzo was driven by a desire for an art deco-inspired, simple black and white pattern that could withstand the demands of a high-traffic, high-visibility area.

Terrazzo’s unique benefits include its incredible durability and aesthetic flexibility, which were key considerations for the Shinola Hotel project. The installation team faced the challenge of maintaining strict color boundaries within the design— a testament to terrazzo’s versatility in customization. This precision underscores terrazzo’s capacity for creating intricate, long-lasting designs without sacrificing the visual integrity of the space.

Seamless Surfaces and Maintenance Ease

Another significant advantage of terrazzo that Michielutti highlights is its ability to create seamless surfaces, enhancing both the aesthetic and functional aspects of the flooring. “Because of the pattern they chose, being a seamless floor – terrazzo can offer that – there’s really no joints to detract from that design,” Michielutti said. “Ease of maintenance, durability, it’s a great surface for them.”

That combination of sleek appearance with durable construction made terrazzo an ideal choice for the hotel’s event space. Its strength ensures that the floor remains pristine and welcoming, even under constant use.

Eco-Friendly and Cost-Effective

Beyond its beauty and durability, terrazzo flooring stands out for its environmental sustainability and cost-effectiveness over its lifespan – a big contributor to its popularity in commercial projects like this one. Terrazzo’s composition, often incorporating recycled materials, and its long lifespan reduce the need for frequent replacements, making it an eco-friendly and economical flooring option in the long run.

Terrazzo: A Perfect Match for the Shinola Hotel

The Shinola Hotel’s decision to incorporate terrazzo flooring into its design was informed by the material’s unique blend of durability, aesthetic versatility, seamless beauty, and ease of maintenance.

The expertise and precision required to realize the project’s vision resulted in a space that embodies the elegance and resilience of terrazzo. As a result, the Shinola Hotel not only stands as a beacon of Detroit’s revival, but also as a testament to the lasting value of choosing the right materials to create spaces that endure in both style and function.
